Earlier this week, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced a pilot effort in partnership with federal and local agencies to combat livestock depredations by gray wolves in Siskiyou County, Sierra County and Plumas County. CDFW will be forming a task force to provide round-the-clock staff support for livestock producers experiencing frequent conflicts with gray wolves, as well as help developing conflict risk management plans and conducting outreach events to provide ranchers with strategies to reduce gray wolf conflicts.
In addition, CDFW will be working with Sierra County and Plumas County to create a new position to support livestock depredation investigations, as well as develop a carcass removal program to mitigate wolf attraction to ranch properties. The program, led by CDFW’s law enforcement and scientific staff, will run throughout the summer.
