On June 10, James Gallagher (R-CA) was sworn in as the U.S. Representative for California’s First Congressional District. Speaker Mike Johnson administered the oath of office following Gallagher’s victory in the June 2 special election to fill the seat left vacant in January after the passing of Representative Doug LaMalfa (R-CA). Gallagher won 62.4 percent of the vote, securing the seat outright and avoiding a runoff.
Representative Gallagher, formerly the Republican leader in the California State Assembly, resigned his California Assembly seat the day before taking the oath. He will serve the remainder of LaMalfa’s term through the end of the year. In remarks on the House floor, Representative Gallagher said he intends to continue LaMalfa’s work representing the rural North State. The First District encompasses much of rural Northern California, including numerous RCRC member counties. Gallagher plans to seek a full two-year term in the November general election, where he will face Democratic State Senator Mike McGuire.
