On June 8, the Senate Agriculture Committee voted 12 to 11 along party lines to advance the nomination of Glen Smith to serve as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Undersecretary for Rural Development. The nomination now moves to the full Senate for a confirmation vote. Smith’s nomination had stalled in committee, with several prior votes to advance him, postponed.

If confirmed, Smith would oversee USDA Rural Development’s portfolio, which distributes billions of dollars annually for rural utilities, small businesses, broadband, and housing programs. He would replace Todd Lindsey, who has served as Acting Undersecretary since September 2025.

Smith previously chaired the Farm Credit Administration during the first Trump Administration, where he oversaw agricultural borrowing and lending institutions.
