House Agriculture Committee Chair, G.T. Thompson (R-PA), is seeking a waiver from House GOP leadership to continue serving as the panel’s top Republican next year, despite being term-limited under conference rules that cap members at three terms leading a committee. Thompson circulated the request in a letter to senior Republicans this week.
Thompson has chaired the committee since 2021, leading recent efforts including changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, a farm bill that passed the House in April with some Democratic support, and legislation to expand the H-2A agricultural visa program. A waiver would allow him to continue overseeing agriculture, nutrition, and rural development policy. Representative Austin Scott (R-GA) is also reportedly seeking the role.
The committee’s Democratic ranking member, Representative Angie Craig (D-MN), will not return to the House next year, with Representative Shontel Brown (D-OH) among those seeking to succeed her.
