This week, Department of Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner announced the establishment of a Joint Task Force which will focus on using underutilized federal land suitable for housing with the aim to increase housing supply and decrease housing costs for Americans. In this partnership, HUD will identify areas with the greatest housing needs, while the Interior Department will assess suitable land, considering environmental and land-use restrictions. The partnership also seeks to streamline the regulatory process, reducing red tape for land transfers or leases to public housing authorities and local governments, with a focus on affordability and supporting rural and tribal communities.
