Earlier this week, the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) released its Annual Progress Report to update stakeholders on the status of California’s efforts to conserve 30 percent of the state’s land and water by the year 2030, also known as 30×30. California began its 30×30 strategy development in 2020, releasing the initial Pathways to 30×30 report in April 2022.
The Progress Report notes that California has placed 26.1 percent of the state’s lands and 21.9 percent of its coastal waters under long-term conservation. This includes more than 2.5 million acres of 30×30 conservation areas, such as an additional 722,000 acres of land that were placed into 30×30 conservation areas and nearly 50,000 acres acquired by the Wildlife Conservation Board.
RCRC has been engaged with CNRA on its 30×30 strategy, particularly in relation to additional land acquisitions and the need to collaborate with local governments. The full Annual Progress Report can be downloaded from the CNRA website.
