On April 16, California Representative Kevin Kiley (CA-03) announced that he has been reinstated to his committee assignments in the 119th Congress. Representative Kiley had been removed from his assignments in March after leaving the Republican Party to register as an Independent. This procedural step occurs automatically when a member changes party affiliation. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise had previously acknowledged that the removal would be temporary. Representative Kiley will serve on the House Committee on Education and Workforce; the Judiciary Committee; the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure; and on the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education where he will serve as Chair.
Representative Kiley made the decision to leave the GOP in preparation to run in a recently redrawn, more competitive district, after the passage of Proposition 50 in California resulted in mid-decade redistricting.
