On Friday, February 21st, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) held an all-day workshop to consider changes to existing policies regarding the safety and reliability of electrical distribution systems. Factors such as aging infrastructure, climate-driven weather events, wildfire mitigation, and equity considerations are driving this effort. Much of the existing reliability data exists in silos with limited customer transparency. CPUC assembled a broad cross-section of stakeholder input, including a variety of local government perspectives including RCRC, on outage data, reporting standards, and reliability threshold improvements to inform a future Staff Proposal. The Staff Proposal is aimed at creating a comprehensive outage reporting framework to enhance transparency, improve data accuracy, and provide regulators with a clearer picture of California’s electric reliability landscape.
