On April 28, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed the Doug LaMalfa Federal Disaster Tax Relief Certainty Act (H.R. 5366). This bill would provide tax relief for victims of federally declared disasters, including hurricanes and wildfires. The measure would also extend victims’ ability to make tax deductible payments from wildfire settlements, which often happen many years after a disaster, through January 1, 2027.

Full text of the measure is available here

The bill was renamed to honor the late Representative Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale), who passed away in January 2026 and was an original cosponsor. The legislation now advances to the Senate, where Senators Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Rick Scott (R-FL) are leading companion legislation.
