The Los Angeles Times – In blow to tribes, Newsom vetoes bill that would have remade little-known state forests

“We appreciate the governor signaling that we’re going to continue to use sound forest management in California,” – RCRC Policy Advocate Staci Heaton
RCRC Senior Policy Advocate Staci Heaton is quoted in the Los Angeles Times discussing Governor Gavin Newsom’s veto of Assembly Bill 2494, which would have shifted the management focus of California’s 14 Demonstration State Forests away from commercial timber production toward conservation and tribal stewardship.

RCRC opposed the bill, sharing the Governor’s concerns that narrowing the management directives would limit the flexible, science-based practices needed to keep forests healthy, while also raising issues regarding potential litigation risks and impacts to forest funding structures.
