In a commentary for the The Union, Nevada County District 4 Supervisor Sue Hoek argues that rural Californians should not be forced to give up reliable, copper-based landline service until a truly dependable replacement is available.
While acknowledging the importance of technological progress, Hoek opposes AT&T’s proposal to discontinue traditional landline service and waive their California’s Carrier of Last Resort obligations. For many rural communities, traditional landline service remains a dependable communications lifeline, particularly during emergencies, wildfires, and other disasters when other networks may be unavailable.
