In a commentary for the Sacramento Bee, Sierra County Supervisor and RCRC Board member Lee Adams and Santa Barbara County Supervisor and RCRC First Vice Chair Bob Nelson argue that California should focus on managing existing wildlife challenges before considering the reintroduction of grizzly bears.
While grizzly bears remain an important part of California’s history, the authors contend that today’s landscape, existing predator conflicts, and limited California Department of Fish and Wildlife resources make Senate Bill 1305 an impractical proposal. They argue that rural communities, already facing wildfires, power shut-offs, rising insurance costs, and increasing conflicts with predators like gray wolves, should not bear the burden of another major wildlife management challenge.
